Realm of My Senses

I've named this site with partial homage to my favorite angry, lonely Japanese ghost, Sadako, whom I first fell in love with upon watching Ringu. Often credited, among a few others, for the whole Asian horror wave that struck the American audience after its release in 1998, the film Ringu also known as The Ring was my foray into Asian ghost tales and movies that quickly became an obsessive past time. Hence, the Sada for short of Sadako. Sarang and Ga are the Korean words for- love and serenade. The other half of this homage may now just go to the kooky character in the following paragraph.

In my 'Sada' research, I stumbled upon a very interesting character, also named Sada, who turned out to not be a character at all but a very real person with a life story that movies and books thrive on and have done so. Films like In the Realm of Senses, and Sada and books like Woman Tearstained in Passion all had their take on the sensational woman called Sada Abe, who was arrested on May 20, 1936 in Tokyo, carrying her lovers extracted penis and testicles in her hand-bag. Three days before, she had asphyxiated her lover after intercourse and removed his genitals. Even more disturbing was her recount of what led to the incident. Crime of passion? Yes, but perhaps for reasons quite different from our modern day Abe, Lorena Bobbitt.
-Sada Sarangga
